The Spanish multinational has given its support to the World
Business Summit on Water and Sustainable Development, which was held today in the framework of the
Expo 2008.
Fluidra’s Director for Innovation and Development, Miquel Vázquez,
gave a talk at the summit meeting on “Technological Advances in the Maintenance and Management of
Water for Domestic and Leisure Use”
Barcelona, 4 July 2008 – The theme for today’s seminars,
which are run by the Spanish Federation for Environmental Associations (FEAMA), was “Water as a
Business Challenge at the Turn of the 21st Century”. The main aim was to raise awareness about the
innovative advances made in the use of water and its sustainability. As a company whose overriding
mission is to develop sustainable applications for the use of water, Fluidra had no other option
than to be present at this debate between experts, politicians, businesspeople and members from the
scientific community to discuss the contributions that businesses must make to technology and
infrastructures in order to tackle the world’s water problems.
These seminars were held in the framework of the World Business Summit on Water and
Sustainable Development at the Zaragoza Expo 2008 from 1 to 4 July. The initiative to hold this
Business Summit was that of the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the support of the
FEAMA.
The talk given by Fluidra’s Director for Innovation and Development, Miquel Vázquez, was
called “Technological Advances in the Maintenance and Management of Water for Domestic and Leisure
Use”. At his presentation, Vázquez posited that in the context of water shortages businesses not
only had a duty to be financially accountable, but also had to be aware of their social and
environmental responsibilities.
Fluidra’s Director for Innovation and Development mentioned that in the current climate,
businesses can contribute to the proper management of this scarce resource through the research and
development of new facilities that bring about savings and reductions in water consumption. Vázquez
discussed the main causes of water loss in domestic and leisure systems and offered solutions to
remedy this situation.
About the Seminars
Other speakers at the meeting included personalities of international renown such as Carlos
Fernández-Jauregui, Director of Office of the United Nations’ Water for Life Decade Programme;
Pablo Huidobro, Head of the Department of Water for the UNIDO/ONUDI (United Nations Industrial
Development Organisation); Polioptro Martínez Austria, Director General of the IMTA (Mexican
Institute of Water Technology). The academic, business and political worlds were widely represented
by such figures as Jaime Palop, the Director of the Water Agency of Andalusia. The closing session
was a working lunch at which Carlos Fernández-Jauregui was the speaker.
As a federation, the FEAMA is doing more than any other to ensure that businesses and the
Spanish authorities will make a firm commitment to sustainable development. The federation’s
current members are environmental business associations from the regions of Andalusia (AESMA),
Castile and León (CASLEMA), Catalonia (ACECMA), the Canaries (ACEMA), Galicia (APROEMA) and Murcia
(AEMA-RM).
